THE WOMEN IN THE
BIBLE AND THEIR WEAPONS
Women empowerment doesn’t start with Frances
Perkins, Mother Theresa, Oprah, Josephine Baker, Coco Chanel, Florence
Nightingale, Billie Holiday, etc; even before 6B.C. women were fighting for
their freedom, for their families, their rights and let’s not forget salvation.
I’m mainly focused on the women in the bible and their battle weapons. Women in
the bible are overshadowed by the powerhouses of the stories but there is so
much women gave to the world, to these heroes in the bible, so much that even
this piece will not cover it all. Let’s give these women a chance to change
something in our lives, our mindsets and follow through their paths to see what
we could with their weapons.
MARY MAGDALENE
There about a number of
times where Mary Magdalene is mentioned in the gospels, where we get a brief of
who she is. Mary Magdalene is a woman who befriended Jesus of Nazareth, one of
the women who travelled with him, providing Him and the twelve disciples with
resources out of their own pockets. From Mary Magdalene, seven demons had been
cast out [Luke 8:2], she was
a sinner before she knew Jesus Christ, and she repented, followed Him and
served him.
Mary
Magdalene is associated with a lot of female sinners in the bible, though there
is no clear indication that she is the sinner who washed Jesus’ feet (with her tears and use her hair
to wipe and bless with kisses the same feet, then poured perfume on them), in
Simon the Pharisee’s house [ Luke 7:36-50]. In Matthew’s Gospel she is also
assumed to be the woman who anointed in Simon the leper’s house at Bethany,
preparing Jesus for his death, according to Simon, she wasted what could have
been sold and donated to the poor [Matthew
26:6-13],[Mark 14: 3-9].
Mary
Magdalene could have been anything, a harlot even, she had seven demons cast
from here. Mary Magdalene was a sinner, maybe a well known sinner, she had a
past. Even when she became pure by virtue of repentance she was still a woman
with a past, so why did Jesus invest so much confidence in her to the extent
that she became an important disciple? What makes Mary Magdalene a woman to
trust enough to walk with Jesus?
Her
weapon, LOYALTY! Repentance could have been an important part of her life, she
could have given so much money and services to Jesus and the twelve, but her
weapon was loyalty to Jesus. After Jesus’ arrestation and death most disciples
lost faith and ran, some doubted to His return but the women stayed, Mary
Magdalene stayed. She could have gone and moved on with her life but she stayed
for Jesus Christ. Loyalty brought her greatest claim, she became a first, the
first to see Jesus, the first to preach his good news.
Being a first matters, being a first is an
honour, being first clears a lot from your past, it brings a future. We forget
that Mary is a women who had seven demons and we admire her for loyalty, her
position in Jesus’ resurrection. Loyalty is a beautiful thing, just because she
was loyal to Jesus, she no longer needs Jesus to be present to defend her past,
the past has been erased and she has a earned a great place in history. The old
Mary Magdalene has been forgotten and a new Mary who saw Jesus first and
preached the first good news after Jesus, has emerged. She has taken her real
claim, she is not just a repentant sinner but she is the woman who stayed for
her Lord.
In
Loyalty to Jesus there is transformation, there is claim of being a first,
there is greater position, promotion in the Kingdom of God.
Now
Peter said to Mary, “Sister we know that the Savior loved you more than all
other women. Tell us the words of the Savour that you remember, the things
which you know that we don’t because we haven’t heard them.” Mary responded, “I
will teach you about what is hidden from you.” And she began to speak these
words to them.” When we research further
that same Mary who was a repentant sinner is now teaching the secrets of the
Kingdom of God. LOYALTY! How loyalty to Jesus could change your life. The same
Peter to whom Jesus said, “You are Pete and on this rock I will build my
Church” defers to Mary Magdalene.
